Maria is at present five years old. She is doing well and in good health. Maria attends the kindergarten from morning till midday. She is learning slowly the letters and numbers, being this way prepared to start school next year. Maria and the other children play using the very few toys or dolls the kindergarten has got. Maria loves to play with dolls. Her favorite color is pink and her future dream is to be a doctor so she can give medicine to the people and heal them.
Maria’s uncle takes her from the kindergarten and brings her to attend our feeding programme. She started to attend the feeding programme at Rodokal every Monday and Thursday and enjoys the combined meals cooked and served to the participating children. She likes the fried chicken, sausages, pasta and rice served by our cooks. Maria attends the Bible classes for the children who are same age with her and enjoys singing to praise the Lord Jesus and learning from God’s Word through the Bible stories. At the end of the Bible lesson, she and the other children spend time to play at our feeding centre under the care of our teachers. A free dental care will be offered to her once a year by our dentist.
Maria lives in Rodokal, a village far in distance from the town. The people in this village make the living by agriculture of raising animals. Every family owns a piece of land in which they work hard to plant vegetables and crops. Most ladies make the bread at home and keep a cow, to at least provide milk for daily consumption. The lands are not productive in this country and the profit gained by the animals is less. Maria’s father can’t provide all the living costs for his family of three persons by his work in the village therefore he emigrates quite often in Greece and finds a job to do there. As he is hired, he stays for at least six months. During the time he is away working, the mother cares for her home alone. She also needs to care for Maria which is missing her father while he is not at home.
