My Story

Chixocol, where your child lives, is a very small village nestled in a mountain valley in the state of Quiche, Guatemala. Life in this state is very difficult and somewhat isolated from the outside world. Most families live in one-room adobe houses with dirt floors and a small attached kitchen. The extremely poor live in houses made of corn stalks. In the past few years electricity and water have become available to most people in the area - however, indoor plumbing is very rare. Most of the families are farmers or shepherds and live off the fruits of their labors. Public education is available for those who can afford it and consider it of value.  Life in Quiche is always a challenge.

I hope this letter finds you happy and healthy. I am so glad to have the opportunity to be part of the feeding program. My name is Brianna Daneiris Barrera Hernandez. I am the daughter of Victor David Barrera Garcia and Ana Josefina Hernandez Mendez. This year, I turn 4 years old in November. I was born in 2021. I am a healthy preschool-student. I enjoy playing dolls.  My favorite color is pink and I love cats.  I love to eat black beans. I really appreciate the effort my parents make to support our family. I thank God that they are in good health.  My father moved to the United States in order to find better job opportunities. He works in a dairy farm. He keeps in touch with us and he faithfully sends us a monthly support. My mother is a housewife. I have one brother and he attends the feeding program too. My family attends a Christian church called “Dios Emmanuel”.

We live in my grandparents’ house. There are five rooms made of adobe, tile roof, concrete floor and a separate kitchen. It has running water and electricity. My parents and grandparents share our expenses. Our pets are a dog and a cat. Our greatest needs are groceries and clothes. It is about 10 minutes by bus from home to the feeding program. Many blessings to you. Until next time!

With much love,

Brianna Daneiris Barrera Hernandez
