My Story

Tunajá is a very primitive area of the state of Quiché, Guatemala.  The inhabitants are Quiché Indians who trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization.  The prevalent language is the Indian dialect - Quiché.  The people are either farmers or shepherds and live off the fruits of their labors.  Very little money ever changes hands as they use a barter system.  Public education is available - however, most families cannot afford it.  Electricity and running water are not available in most of the area.  Life in Tunajá is extremely difficult.

Hello, it is my pleasure to greet you on this beautiful Day. I send many blessings to you. My name is Melany Isabela Riz Morente. I was born on June 1, 2022, in Zacualpa Quiche. I am 4 years old. My health is good. I am not at school yet. I like playing with dolls. My favorite animal is the chick. I like purple and pink. My favorite food is roast beef. I have two brothers and two sisters. My mother is Ana Elizabeth Morente de la Cruz de Riz. She takes care of us and the house. She helps with the income by raising chickens to sell. My father is Antolin Riz Ruiz. He works as a farmer to support our family. Thankfully, they are both in good health. We are currently attending a church.

It is a blessing for me to be part of the feeding program. I usually walk for 30 minutes alongside my mother to the program. We live in a rented house that has 3 rooms and one separate kitchen. She pays Q300.00 = US $40 monthly. It is made of adobe, tile roof and cemented floor. There is an artisanal well. Besides that, my parents pay monthly for the electricity service. Some of our domestic animals are chickens. Our needs are food monthly. Well, I have to say goodbye to you. I send many blessings and strong hugs to you. Until next time!
