My Story

Pasojoc is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiche, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is more than a two hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Pasojoc is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major corps. The Quiche Mayans who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiche - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.

Hello! How are you doing? My name is Maytelin Tatiana Rosales Montufar, and I am pleased to share with you a little about my life. I was born on December 16, 2020. I love eating broccoli, my favorite color is yellow, and my favorite animals are giraffes. I am a healthy girl, and I attend pre-kinder. I live with my parents and siblings. I have two sisters and one brother. We do not attend any church at the moment. My father’s name is Erwin Leonardo Rosales. He is doing well and makes a living as a farmer.

My mother’s name is Maudy Rosalina Montufar Soto. She works as a teacher in an elementary school. She suffers from hypertriglyceridemia, but she is under medical treatment at the social security institute. We live in a rented house. My parents pay Q700=$91.27 for it monthly. The house has three rooms, but we can only use one of them. It is made of concrete block with a concrete roof and concrete floor. We have electricity and get water from a nearby spring. I am so happy because I am already part of the feeding program in Pasojoc I. It is only a three-minute walk from where I live. Well, it is time to say goodbye, but I hope to hear from you soon.

Kisses and hugs,

Maytelin Tatiana Rosales Montufar
