Pasojoc I
Guatemala
Child
Pasojoc is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiche, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is more than a two hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Pasojoc is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major corps. The Quiche Mayans who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiche - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.
Hello! It is a great pleasure to greet you by this means and wish you many blessings in everything you do. My name is Irma Leticia Pu Uzoy, and I am so glad to share with you more about my family and me. Thankfully, we are in good health; I am 9 years old, I am in 3rd grade at school, I enjoy playing soccer, and my favorite color is pink. I like cats, and the food I like to eat the most are “Hilachas” (typical dish). My family and I are not part of any church yet, but I would like you to pray for us so that God can help us to have groceries and school supplies, since these are some of our needs. I have six brothers and three sisters.
My father’s name is Nazario Pu, and he works so hard to cover our needs by working both as a farmer and day laborer. My mother’s name is Juna Uzoy Benito. She works at home, looking after us, doing the cleaning, and she also earns some money by raising and selling hens; we also have some turkeys at home. Fortunately, we live in our own house; it is made of adobe walls, tin sheets and tile roof, cement floor, it has three rooms and a kitchen. We have electricity and we pay for this service every month. We have water and we get it from a spring, so we do not have to pay for this.
We live five minutes away from my school where I receive my food from the feeding program, and I walk to get there. Thank you so much for reading my letter, and I want you to know that my mother gave this information to the Evangelism team when she came to register me in the program. I hope you like it. I say goodbye to you for now, and I pray God blesses you.
In Jesus Name,
Irma Leticia Pu Uzoy
