My Story

Tunajá is a very primitive area of the state of Quiché, Guatemala.  The inhabitants are Quiché Indians who trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization.  The prevalent language is the Indian dialect - Quiché.  The people are either farmers or shepherds and live off the fruits of their laborers. Very little money ever changes hands as they use a barter system.  Public education is available - however, most families cannot afford it.  Electricity and running water are not available in most of the area.  Life in Tunajá is extremely difficult.

Hello! This is Edvin Adolfo Garcia Coj, and it is a joy to tell you about me for the first time. I am 5 years old. I was born on July 23, 2020. I am too young to attend school. I play pretending to be a woodcutter. My favorite color is green, and my favorite animal is the cat. I love eating eggs with black beans. I am an only child. I attend the feeding program with my cousins. We usually walk for 15 minutes to get there.

My father is Tomas Garcia Mendez. Sadly, he abandoned us 4 years ago. He does not have any communication with us nor help us economically. My mother is Juana Coj de la Cruz. She is my only supporter. However, she had to travel to Guatemala City to work in a tortilla shop. She comes to visit me once a year. Meanwhile, I stay under the care of my maternal grandmother. Her name is Magdalena de la Cruz Bartolo. Thank God, both are healthy. Currently, we are not attending any church. We live in a rented house that belongs to a neighbor. We must pay Q300.00 = USA $40.00. We share that house with my uncles. The house has one room and a kitchen. It is made of adobe, tile roof and cemented floor. There is electricity and running water. My mother and uncle pay for those services. We have chickens like domestic animals. We have many needs, but the main ones are food, corn and clothes. Well, I have to say goodbye to you for now. I send my best wishes to your family and you. May God bless you richly!

Best regards,

Edvin Adolfo Garcia Coj
