My Story

Pasojoc is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiche, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is more than a two hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Pasojoc is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major corps. The Quiche Mayans who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiche - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.

Hello, it is a pleasure to greet you by this means, and to share with you some news about my family and me. Thankfully, I am in good health. My name is Edson Yordani Anderson Luis Ajqui, and I was born on March 8th, 2016, so I am 9 years old. I am attending school this year. I am a 3rd grader, and I enjoy playing soccer in my spare time. My favorite meal is fried chicken, I like blue, and the animal I like the most is the dog. I have two sisters, and one of them is also registered at the feeding program like me; we live 45 minutes away from it, so we walk to arrive, and my aunt comes with us to look after us. As a family, we are not attending any church, and we were encouraged by the evangelism teacher to attend a church.

Fortunately, my parents are in good health; my father works both as a farmer and as a day laborer. My mother contributes to our home expenses by selling her hens, and we also have cows at home. We live in my paternal grandmother’s house, and she pays the electricity bill every month. The house is made of adobe walls with a tile roof and dirt floor. It has two rooms and a kitchen; we do not have running water, so we get it from a water spring through a hose. Some of our needs are groceries, but we trust that we will have provision to have the necessities every day.  Before saying goodbye, I want you to know that my mother provided this information. May God bless you, and I wish you the best in everything you do.

Kisses and Hugs,

Edson Yordani Anderson Luis Ajqui
