My Story

Chixocol, where your child lives, is a very small village nestled in a mountain valley in the state of Quiche, Guatemala. Life in this state is very difficult and somewhat isolated from the outside world. Most families live in one-room adobe houses with dirt floors and a small attached kitchen. The extremely poor live in houses made of corn stalks. In the past few years electricity and water have become available to most people in the area - however, indoor plumbing is very rare. Most of the families are farmers or shepherds and live off the fruits of their labors. Public education is available for those who can afford it and consider it of value.  Life in Quiche is always a challenge.

My name is Sayda Sofia de la Cruz Higueros, and I am 4 years old. I was born on June 12, 2020. I am in good health. I like to play with dolls. I love the color red and dogs. My favorite food is fried chicken. I am not studying because of my age. My family and I are members of Liberty Church. Let me introduce you to my family. My father´s name is Francisco Mardoqueo de la Cruz Toj. He is a blacksmith. My mother´s name is Maria Dolores Higueros Garcia. She stays at home. We live in own our house. It has two rooms and a separate kitchen. The walls are made of adobe, tin sheet roof with concrete floor. We do not have running water. My grandmother shares it with us. We obtain it with a hose. Thanks to God, we have electricity, and my father pays for it. We have some hens and pigs. We are a family of limited resources, and many times, it is very complicated to obtain the necessities to cover our expenses. Some of our needs are groceries. I walk about twenty minutes to attend the feeding program. I am grateful to you for taking the time to read my letter.

From the bottom of my heart,

Sayda Sofia de la Cruz Higueros
