My Story

Zacualpa is a small but busy village in a mountain valley.  The village is inhabited by both Quiché Indians and Ladinos (those with mixed European ancestry). The prevalent language is Spanish. Families in this village live in one or two room homes generally constructed of either wood or adobe.  Although many of the people are farmers, the village contains several small, specialized stores, a body repair shop for buses, mechanics, plumbers and many other smalltown tradesmen. It also has a large open-air market which serves much of the area.  Even with all of this, the poverty level is very high, and the children are very needy.

What a blessing to greet you today! Let me introduce myself to you. My name is Eldy Emiliano Ajqui Tzoy. I was born on June 10, 2013. I am 11 years old. I am a 4th grade student. I like red, and my favorite animal is the bird. I enjoy tasting chow mein. In my free time, I like watching television. Thank God, my health is good. I usually walk alone for 15 minutes to arrive at the feeding program.

My father is Carlos Ajqui Alvarado. He supports us by selling smoothies and shaved ice with syrup and fruits in the local plaza. My mother is Elidia Tzoy Morente. She does the hard housework and takes care of us. Besides that, she helps my father with the selling. I have two brothers and one sister. Their names are Katty, Michael and Oliver. They are enrolled in the feeding program. My family attends the Prince of Peace Church. Fortunately, they all enjoy good health. Our greatest necessity is food. About my house, it belongs to my paternal grandmother. The house has three rooms made of brick walls, cemented roof and granite floor. There is electricity and running water that my father pays monthly and annually. Our domestic animals are chickens and turkeys. Thank you so much for your attention to this. I look forward to writing to you again. Before saying goodbye, I want you to know that my father gave all this information about me. May God bless you and take care of you wherever you are!

Best regards,

Eldy Emiliano Ajqui Tzoy
