My Story

Zacualpa is a small but busy village in a mountain valley. Both Quiche Mayans and Ladinos (those with mixed European ancestry) inhabit the village. The prevalent language is Spanish. Families in this village live in one or two-room homes usually constructed of either wood or adobe. Although many of the people are farmers, the village contains several small and specialized stores, a body repair shop for buses, mechanics, plumbers, and many other small-town tradesmen. It also has a large open-air market which serves much of the area. Even with all of this, the poverty level is extremely high, and the children are very needy.

Hello! My full name is Lesvia Maribel Chitic Tzunux, and I am so happy to tell you about my life. I was born on September 8, 2012. Thankfully, I am a healthy 12-year-old boy. I am in fifth grade and my favorite pastime is reading. I love eating fried chicken and my favorite color is pink. Domestic animals are nice, but the cutest one is the rabbit. That is my favorite animal! Now, I will tell you a little about my family. My mother is Isabel Tzunux Chingo de Chitic, and she is doing well. She keeps busy cleaning the house, preparing our meals, and taking care of my siblings and me. My father is Sebastian Chitic Jimon, and he is doing well. He works hard as a farmer to provide our family with all the necessities to survive. As for our spiritual life, let me tell you that we do not attend any church at the moment, but I hope we can do it soon.

My family and I live in our own house. It is made of concrete blocks with a tin sheet roof and a granite floor. It has three rooms, a separate kitchen, electricity, and running water. My parents are making great struggles and sacrifices to improve the appearance of our house, so I ask you to pray for them to finish the improvement successfully. We are a needy family and one of our greatest needs is a new artisanal concrete sink. The feeding program is a 40-minute walk from where I live. It is a great blessing to have warm food for free there. I say goodbye to you now, but thank you so much for reading my letter!
