My Story

Zacualpa is a small but busy village in a mountain valley. Both Quiche Mayans and Ladinos (those with mixed European ancestry) inhabit the village. The prevalent language is Spanish. Families in this village live in one or two room homes usually constructed of either wood or adobe. Although many of the people are farmers, the village contains several small and specialized stores, a body repair shop for buses, mechanics, plumbers, and many other small-town tradesmen. It also has a large open-air market which serves much of the area. Even with all of this, the poverty level is extremely high, and the children are very needy.

My full name is Sofia Abigail de la Cruz Gonzalez, and it is a great pleasure to greet you. Before telling you my story, I want you to know that my mom and I gave all this information to a teacher of the LW evangelism team so you could hear from me. I was born on February 26, 2016. Today, I am a healthy 8-year-old girl. I am in second grade and my favorite color is pink. What I enjoy the most is playing with my dolls in my free time. My favorite animals are cats, and my favorite food is pizza. I attend LW Church with my parents. I am an only child in my family. My father's name is Jorge Alberto de la Cruz Calel, and he makes a living as a primary teacher. My mom also works hard to help at home with her income. Her name is Juana Floricelda Gonzalez Castro, and she is dedicated to selling typical fabrics.

My family and I live with my paternal grandfather, uncles, and aunts. We share the household chores. My grandfather is the owner of the house. It is made of bricks with a concrete roof and a ceramic floor. It has three rooms, a separate kitchen, electricity, and running water. As for pets, let me tell you that we only have one cat at home. I am glad to be part of the feeding program because I can enjoy delicious food for free. It is a fifteen-minute walk from where I live. I will leave you now, but I would like to hear from you soon.

Kisses and hugs,

Sofia Abigail de la Cruz Gonzalez
