My Story

Zacualpa is a small but busy village in a mountain valley. The village is inhabited by both Quiché Mayans and Ladinos (those with mixed European ancestry). The prevalent language is Spanish. Families in this village live in one or two room homes generally constructed of either wood or adobe. Although many of the people are farmers, the village contains several small, specialized stores, a body repair shop for buses, mechanics, plumbers and many other small-town tradesmen. It also has a large open-air market which serves much of the area. Even with all of this, the poverty level is very high, and the children are very needy.

Hello! I send you many greetings through this letter, wishing you the best. My name is Brithany Alejandra Dubon Luis and before telling you about my life, I want you to know that my mother helped me to give all my information to a teacher of LW. I was born on July 24, 2015. I am in first grade and my favorite hobby is playing with my dolls. I love eating spaghetti, my favorite color is red, and I like hens. Actually, my family and I raise hens and pigs at home. I live with my mother, father, and two sisters. I do not have any brothers. My father’s name is Lucas Alberto Dubon Dubon. He is a farmer and works hard to support us. My mother’s name is Florinda Luis de la Cruz. She makes a living as a domestic employee to help with her income at home.

We attend a Catholic Church in our town. We live with my maternal grandparents in their house. It has one room and a separate kitchen. The walls are made of bricks with a tin sheet roof and dirt floors. We get water from a nearby river and have electricity. My parents share the expenses for that service with my grandparents. Thankfully, we are all in good health. We are a needy family. Some of our greatest needs are groceries. I am glad because I can receive delicious food at the feeding program. My house is a 20-minute walk to get to the feeding program. I say goodbye to you now, but I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you so much for reading my letter!
