My Story

Dear Sponsor,

Hello! How are you? I fondly greet you and I wish much happiness in your home. I want to tell you that I live with my father, grandmother, aunts and uncles. We live in my grandmother’s house and it is made of tin sheets. It has four rooms and we live comfortably there. My father works as a farmer in the town. My mother has not lived with us for many years.  We do not have communication with her, but we know that she is alive. We were under the care of one of my aunts, but we are older now and we can prepare our food and wash our clothes by ourselves. We buy on credit in my aunt’s store, and my father is the one who pays the bill. We share the house with other families and every family has its own room. Thank God, my whole family and I are in good health. I am studying and I am in seventh grade this year. I like my school because it is big and there is much happiness there. My favorite classes are of “aprestamiento” (it is a class where we learn to develop our skills and abilities).

I am not working because I am dedicating all my time to studying, and I am still too young to do it. When I am older, I will look for a job in order to help my family financially. One of my happiest moments was when I was invited to my cousin’s birthday because I drank soda and ate cake and “estofado” (typical dish). It was a nice experience for my family. I wore new clothes and boots for Christmas, and we had chocolate and “tamales” (typical dish) for the dinner. I also lit fireworks. It was a beautiful night that we shared togehter. My dream is to become a secretary and help many people. I like singing, listening to music and watching TV with my friends. We do not attend a church, but I am sure we will seek a church soon. My hardest situation is that my mother is not with us. I want to ask you to pray for my family so that we can be together again. It was a great pleasure for me to write you this letter. I say goodbye to you for now hoping to hear from you soon.

With much love

Carmen Yolanda Yat Diaz
