Hello! Let me begin by thanking you for taking the time to read my update. I want to tell you that I walk for one and a half hour to arrive to the feeding program. I am Laura Gricelda but everybody affectionately calls me Laura. I am 14 years old and I will have my birthday in December. I take classes in my village and I am an eighth-grade student. My school is about forty–five minutes away from my home. I love Communication and Language but Mathematics is a little difficult for me. Currently my teacher is coming to my home to check my work and leave me more homework. He comes every week and I am so happy because I can continue with my studies. After doing my homework I help with the household work and herding our sheep.
The people who live in the house are my grandparents, siblings and me. Unfortunately I do not have my mother with me because she passed away some years ago. After that, my father abandoned us and currently we do not receive any support from him. For that reason we are under my grandparents’ care and I affectionately call them my father and mother. They are Juana and Alejandro Ruiz. My grandmother used to do the housework and my grandfather´s job consists of farming the land. Furthermore, my older brother Rolando is supporting us economically. He works in Guatemala City in a pig farm and earns Q700.00 =93.33 dollars per month. He is studying accounting and God willing this year is going to graduate. He also is supporting me in my studies because he wants to give me and my other siblings a better future.
My family and I are members of Catholic Church, and for now we are praying at home. I want you to pray for my grandmother´s health because recently she lost her vision due to her age. She is 77 years old. Unfortunately she has not visited the doctor due to our lack of money. Besides that I am grateful to God because we all are in good health. In spite of the hard health situation that we are currently facing in our country, our Lord has been taking care of us. We trust in our Lord's mercy and that He will put His healing hands over all people who are suffering during this pandemic. I would like to receive a letter from you and have the opportunity to share our life experiences with each other.
God bless you!
Laura Gricelda Ruiz Ruiz
A-A-C NOTE: After the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in our country (March 13, 2020), our President ordered the closure of all the schools in order to prevent children becoming affected by this virus. We do not know when the schools will open again. However, most of the schools are assigning homework to their students to cover the content for the current school year. As a team, we are praying that God takes control of this situation soon so that we may continue on with our lives.
